Playdough Shapes
Play with bricks and playdough.
There are 3 barns in the farmyard. Can you put an animal inside each
barn?
The animals are outside. Your mission is to put them inside for a safe night…
To recognise squares in two dimensions; to distinguish between “in” and “out”; to learn to manipulate bricks.
1 baseplate
33 random bricks
1 bowl
Build the first square in the top left edge of the baseplate: go from left to right with 3 horizontal bricks, adding 2 vertical bricks below each end. Complete the square by adding a bottom horizontal line of 3 bricks.
Add 2 more squares anywhere on the base plate.
Place the 3 remaining bricks in a bowl. They are the animals.
1
Ask the child to find the houses on the baseplate.
2
Tell them to place one brick from the bowl inside each barn.
The paddock,
all around.
And inside,
outside,
inside.
The zebu
with the horns.
The horns are on the head, on the head.
On the head,
There are the zebu horns.
And you Lucien, you’re going to put the zebu
in the paddock.
Yes.
Great,
Well done!
one, two,
and three. And I’ll give you
three zebus.
Yes, that’s very good.
A zebu in the paddock.
Very good! Well done!
Encourage the child to use both hands.
Ensure the child understands the difference between inside and outside the barn.
Build squares and rectangles and the child can choose which shape to place the brick in.
Encourage the child to imagine different scenarios: for example, these 3 dogs are tired. Help each of them find a kennel.
