Perfect Ten

3 + 7 = 10
Easy, if you remember where the numbers are.

Activity details

Children add number bricks together to make ten. But it’s not that simple!
The numbers are hidden. This activity mixes memory and numeracy skills.

Goals

To practice and improve memory, observation and addition skills in a multi-medium activity.
To understand and follow rules.

The adult prepares

  • 8 number bricks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9

  • 8 equal-sign bricks =

  • 1 baseplate with the number sign brick.

Attach the number bricks randomly on the baseplate, in 2 columns.

Cover each brick with an equal sign brick.

The children play

1

Ask player 1 to uncover two number bricks and add the numbers revealed together.

If the total is 10, they take the bricks. If not, they cover them up again.

2

Player 2 follows the same instructions, trying to remember what the hidden numbers are.

Always make sure that both players read the numbers aloud and allow the other player to touch the position of the bricks.

So in this game, you have bricks
and on the accessible bricks
what do you see?
Only equals!
Only equals.
There are 8 bricks, all with equals.
One on each side. They are lined up like this.
And underneath are numbers.
You’ll have to look at what’s under these bricks, equal
but only by lifting two at a time.
So you’re going to choose two bricks.
You’re going to look at the first one, the second one, one on the left and one on the right.
And if it makes ten, you win.
Otherwise, you have to close it.
Oh no! Like a memory game. Okay.
And so, to remember for next time, tell yourself not to take
the same ones and to look for the one that might be interesting to make ten.
Yes, is that OK for you?
Yes!
9 and 1
That makes 10.
So you win.
So you take the bricks,
you remove them
and there you go, you win them.
And it’s Ahmet’s turn…
What about you, Coralie?
Yes!
So, Coralie, you have to say out loud
what you got, and Ahmet too, so that Joao can hear you.
2 + 8
4 and?
and 6 on top.
So that makes 10.
So she wins those two bricks, you take them
So I have an 8
and a 2, that makes 10
So you win. To Coralie.
Your turn, Joao.
So 1…
I should let you say
Say it loud for Houdeyfa and you can even show him where it is
so that he knows in the column there, the second
is a 1, that’s a 7.
So it has to close.

Facilitation tips

  • Ask: How do you remember where the bricks are?
