Building Operation

Architect or mathematician? Be both!

Activity details

The more maths you do, the taller your building. Let’s do it !

Goals

To improve math calculation.
To learn to write operations.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate with a number sign brick at the top left corner

  • number bricks in a bowl

Write ‘= 8’ in the middle of the baseplate.

The children play

1

The child picks three number bricks and uses them to create a correct math equation that equal 8, if possible.

If not possible, they continue picking one brick at a time until a correct equation can be made from 3 or more bricks.

2

They build the first floor of the building by correctly writing the equation on the baseplate
using any operation signs.

3

They repeat the directions and include left-over bricks to build more floors for the building.

Facilitation tips

  • Add a timer.

  • Make it a collaborative activity.
