Odd or Even?

Sort the numbers: one tower of even, one tower of odd.

Activity details

Whole numbers are either even or odd. Can you build a tower of odd numbers and a tower of even numbers? Which one do you think will be the tallest?

Goals

To recognise odd and even numbers.
To plan appropriate actions to follow instructions and build number towers.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate with 1 number-sign brick in the top left corner

  • 12 random number bricks in a bowl

The children play

1

The child picks a number from the bowl.
They read it and say whether it is an even number or an odd number.

2

The child builds two towers on the baseplate: one with even numbers, the other with odd numbers.

Facilitation tips

  • Encourage collaborative play with peers.

  • Use a timer.

  • Change the number or selection of bricks.

  • Use a brick that doesn’t fit the pattern e.g. a brick that doesn’t represent a number, as an an ‘odd one out’.
