Keep the Sequence Going

Follow the pattern!

Activity details

Do you know what a sequence is? It’s a regular pattern that repeats itself.
Once you’ve identified it, reproduce the pattern all the way to the end of the baseplate.

Goals

To recognise patterns of bricks.
To learn reading direction, from left to right.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate

  • 12 bricks

  • 1 bowl

Start a simple left-to-right sequence from the top left of the base plate with 4 bricks:
i.e. one vertical brick – one horizontal – another vertical – another horizontal.

Place the rest of the bricks in the bowl.

The children play

1

The child feels the bricks on the baseplate.

Explain that they are arranged in a sequence.

2

The child continues the sequence to the edge of the baseplate with other bricks.

Facilitation tips

  • Turn the sequence into a song! Together with the child, decide that for example a vertical
brick means a short sound, and a horizontal brick means a long sound. Then both ‘sing
the song’ as the child moves their finger along the sequence.

  • Swap roles: Ask the child to start a new sequence for you to complete.

  • Make different sequences: vary the space between bricks; alternate single bricks with mini-
    towers of 2 bricks etc.
