Fish and Birds

Are they fish in the sea or birds in the sky?

Activity details

2-stud bricks are animals with two big eyes.
Do you want them to be birds ? Make them fly, eyes at top.
Go for a fish? Make them swim, horizontally.

Goals

To understand the importance of the orientation of the brick.
To participate in own learning and in mastering the content.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate

  • 8 equal sign bricks

  • 10 letter bricks C in a bag

Make a horizontal separation line in the middle of the base plate with the equal sign bricks.

Make the child feel the line in the middle of the baseplate: these are the waves.
Above the waves is the sky, and below is the sea.

The children play

1

The child picks and feels a brick from the bowl: they are animals. The two studs are its eyes.
The child decides if the animal is a bird or a fish.

if it’s a bird, they place it vertically in the sky, with its eyes at the top, so that it flies up to the sun.

2

If they decide it’s a fish, they place it horizontally into the sea.

They can make it swim to the right or to the left.

Facilitation tips

  • Tell animals in the bag are only fish or only birds.

  • Ask about animals incorrectly positioned: Why is your bird upside down? Why is your fish trying to jump of out the sea?

  • Use 2 different letter bricks for birds and fish.
