The Brick Walking on its Head

All the bricks are right side up… all but one!

Activity details

One brick is upside down, like walking on its head.
Can you find it and replace it right side up?

Goals

To learn the correct reading position of a braille brick.
To use both hands to track a line.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate

  • 7 letter A bricks or more

Make a horizontal line of at least 7 A bricks, leaving a space between each of them.

Place all bricks, except one, in correct reading position.

The children play

1

The child explores the baseplate, finds the upside-down brick…

2

…and replaces it right side up.

Facilitation tips

  • Explain that a character is always printed in the flat space on the bottom of each brick. Help the child identify this space on the brick. This is how you know the correct orientation of the brick.

  • Make the activity more difficult with several lines, with bricks arranged without spaces in between, with more bricks upside-down, with bricks with more studs. Choose letters from A to J. They have a large flat space, easy to find.
