Pre-braille
Make the River Flow
Create an unbroken line… and make the water flow!
It keeps on rolling! Build a good road and see how far your marble will
go.
This street has two curbs so your marble or ball can roll without falling off.
To recognise movement and understand notions of alignment.
To develop spatial skills.
1 baseplate
16 or more random bricks
1 bowl
1 marble or a small ball
Place one horizontal brick in the top left corner of the base plate, and another one 2 spaces below (leave more spaces if using a bigger ball).
Place the other bricks in the bowl.
1
Help the child explore the baseplate to find the edges of the road being built.
Ask them to carry on building the road using the bricks from the bowl.
2
Show them how to roll the ball safely down the road, from one end to the other.
Let them have a free play session.
Mack, 4 years old, is doing this activity with a sighted friend.
An opportunity to play together when the road is finished.
We will make a road for your ball to play with.
So it is the beginning, the beginning of the road, here.
And we need to finish it.
For that you have bricks. So you can pick them and you continue it here.
Pick a brick. Pick one. Any one. And place it here. And you continue.
That’s nice. Perfect. Yes. Okay.
Look at how Mack is doing.
That’s perfect.
Good.
That’s a nice road.
Oh, great. Look how big and long it is.
Can we try? It’s a long, long road.
And you can now play with your ball.
So start at the beginning.
And can you make it roll till here? Yes.
Maybe we can do a big one. Yes! Again?
Encourage the child to make up stories: Where does your road go? What’s going on over there?
Extend the road and make bends.
Make a larger road, playing with peers.
