This little caterpillar wants to eat! Give him food to make him grow.

Goals

To develop ambidextrous fine motor skills.
To recognise notion of alignment.

The adult prepares

10 random LEGO or DUPLO bricks in a bowl.

The children play

1

Tell the child to pick a brick from the bowl to be the hungry caterpillar.

2

Tell them to help him to grow, by feeding him with bricks from the bowl.

Facilitation tips

  • Demonstrate how two bricks fit together: the studs of one brick have to fit into the hollow part of another brick.

  • Provide an example of a caterpillar, if necessary.

  • Ask the child: How long do you think you can make your caterpillar?

LEGO Braille Bricks were too small for Indiana, 4 years old, who needs to work on grasping and releasing. This activity can be done with DUPLO for young children.

So this is the beginning of the caterpillar. This is the beginning.
And then we have to add another thing.
He’s eating salad to grow. Biggest caterpillar.
More? More salad? Yes.
Ooh. Biggest, longest caterpillar.
He would like more… kale?
Maybe. Yes.
I think he would like more salad.
Mmh, he’s eating a lot.
More?
-Yeah.
Oh yes.
More.
The caterpillar is eating.
More?
-Yes.
Do you think the caterpillar wants more? Ooh.
Okay.
You’re feeding the caterpillar and making it grow.
Long, long, long.
What do you think?
Is it enough?
Yeah.
