Goals

To develop vocabulary.

The adult prepares

  • 1 baseplate

  • all the letters

  • 1 bowl

Prepare an alphabet baseplate so that the child find the letters easily.

The children play

1

Ask player 1 to think of a word, and write it on the baseplate.

Remove one letter and place it in the bowl with 3 other “intruder” letters.

2

Tell player 2 to read the letters on the baseplate, decide which letter is missing and find it in the
bowl.

Player 2 completes the word and reads it aloud. Player 1 says yes or no.

Facilitation tips

  • Change the number of bricks in the bowl.

  • Change the number of letters removed.

  • Ask: What was your strategy for the activity? Did you try all the letters or guessed the word?

I’ll give you a baseplate,
A word is written on it.
But a letter is missing
and this letter is hidden
in the bowl among other letters.
It’s up to you to find it.
Annn…
An…mal
Did you find it?
Yes, I think it needs an I. Yes.
Can you read the whole word?
ANIMAL
Perfect. I’ll put a 2nd word…
