Letter Challenge

Pick two letters then build a word around them!

Goals

To develop vocabulary and word understanding.
To organise letters to create and write words.

The adult prepares

  • 1 alphabet baseplate

  • 1 baseplate

  • 10 random letters-bricks in a bowl

The children play

The child picks two letters from the bowl, and finds of a word with these letters and any other letter needed from the alphabet baseplate.

They write the word on the baseplate and read it aloud.

Players take turns, picking new letters…

… and writing new words.

Facilitation tips

  • Change the rule: one of the picked letters must be the first letter of the word.

  • Increase the difficulty of the letters placed in the bowl (mirror letters, rare letters).

  • Ask for words linked to a specific lesson (vocabulary).
